Help on Decision

Flat Panel General & New FP Tech - www.avsforum.com
My parents just moved into a new house. It has a huge built in entertainment center and has two Bose Virtually Invisible 791’s speakers in the ceiling above the couch. They currently have a 42" 720p Panasonic VIERA TC Plasma that I got them 10 years ago. It looks really small in the new space and they don't have an A/V receiver to take advantage of the built-in speakers. 99% of their viewing is going to be done through Spectrum cable with a HD feed/no 4K. The viewing area is 9ft from the TV.

I would like to upgrade their experience and had planned on spending ~$1,500. Initially I was thinking of getting them a 55" LG OLED and calling it a day, but I am wondering if this wasted on the fact that they won't be watching any HDR content on it, at least for quite a while and I wasn’t aware that there were speakers in the house that could be leveraged.

I was looking at getting a pair of Sony - Core Series 5" 3-Way Bookshelf Speakers and the matching center. Not sure what I would get them for an A/V receiver and a sub (or if I should just get the sub later/hold off). This would obviously blow the budget if I get the OLED as well, so then I was looking at maybe a TCL-P or a Vizio D series. My biggest concern with going the LCD route is my Dad has mentioned a few times how much he appreciates the viewing angles on the plasma compared to what he sees on other large screen TVs at hotels, friend’s house, etc. He also watches TV using headphones in the early morning so he wouldn’t always be getting the benefit of a 5.1 experience. It is probably 1/3 of the time with headphones.

I am relatively tech savvy, but I have never run a 5.1 setup or used an A/V receiver of my own. We use a SONOS Playbase for our TV, so I am pretty lacking in experience/POV in that space.

What would you do in this situation? Go with the OLED, go with the 5.1 and LCD, or go with the 5.1 and wait for OLEDs to drop in price. Thanks
