Want to build 5.1 HT for large living room, need advice

DIY Speakers and Subs - www.avsforum.com
Hey all, I previously posted here about a ~$1.5k media room setup using consumer speakers and got some good feedback, but now I am wondering if I can save some money/spend the same amount with way better performance with DIY.

A lot of my answers to the old thread still apply, re-posted and updated below. A lot of the stuff I demoed for my previous post is now out of my price range but kept for prosperity.

My main question is should I go for a really good 3.1 and get like cheap surrounds or full 5.1?

Additionally, I'm a big fan of demoing, and obviously I can't demo these. As noted below I like the sound profiles of Elac, Goldenear, Martin Logan, and neutral-ish speakers in general.

That all being said, here are some of the setups I considered. This is not comprehensive and will look at anything yall suggest (Speedsters looked cool for example due to ribbon tweeter). This setup will be deployed in a open concept nightmare living room (huge, hard surfaces, glass, kitchen in back) and will be almost 100% used for movies (love movies).

Overnight Sensation:

L\R: Overnight Sensation x2

C: Overnight Sensation MTM (can be used as center right?)

Surrounds: Overnight Sensation x2

Sub: Powered Eminence 8" with Dual Passive Radiator 200 Watt Subwoofer Kit

Receiver: Suitable AVR on Accessories4Less - $350 budgeted

Total: $1056.96

Overnight Sensation MTM x3:

L\R: Overnight Sensation MTM x2

C: Overnight Sensation MTM (can be used as center right?)

Surrounds: Overnight Sensation x2

Sub: Powered Eminence 8" with Dual Passive Radiator 200 Watt Subwoofer Kit

Receiver: Suitable AVR on Accessories4Less - $350 budgeted

Total: $1116.60

Fusion 6 5.1:

L\R: Fusion 6 Vibe x2

C: Fusion 6 Vibe Center

Surrounds: Fusion 6 Vibe x2

Sub: Powered Eminence 8" with Dual Passive Radiator 200 Watt Subwoofer Kit

Receiver: Suitable AVR on Accessories4Less - $350 budgeted

Total: $1292.99

1) Your budget.

- ~$1.5k, cheaper is good.

2) Your listening interests: movies/gaming/music--and whether or not any of those are your primary concern.

- Movies, gaming, and music in that order with a disproportionate weight to movies (huge movie buff)

3) Your existing audio equipment (make/models) if any. Include comments about what you hope to improve upon.

- Ultra crappy $200 Home theater in a box by Sony purchased in 2008/09. Will be moved elsewhere (probably office).

4) The size of your room. Please also mention if there are adjacent open areas and how big they are (important for subwoofer choice).

- The living room is a Home Theater nightmare. Big open floorplan with kitchen in the back, vaulted ceiling, hardwood floors, and a giant glass slider to the right. Receiver with EQ is probably important.

5) Any placement restrictions.

- Not really, plenty of room.

6) Any aesthetic or size concerns.

- For me no, wife might protest a bit but I think it'll be okay.

7) Any equipment you are already considering (or would not consider).

I have demoed:

- DefTech BP9060. Liked the base, didn't really like the sound too much.

- GoldenEar Triton 3+. Very good, super clean sound and the included subs were great.

- Martin Logan Motion 40 and 35xt. I really like the sound from both, and was shocked how good the 35xt was for the price and the fact it was a bookshelf. Would be interested in pricing out a Martin Logan set.

- Elac Uni-Fi sounded very nice

I have NOT demoed but am extremely interested in:

- PSA series, either the MT-110s/C or the MTM-210/C (maybe skip the center at first) with one of their subs seem like a great value, and I keep reading about how they're all about efficiency and accuracy which is appealing. How does their sound compare to the Martin Logans as it will probably be impossible to demo them?

8) Any particular audio sonic signatures you know you prefer (e.g., you are a basshead, you have a preference for bright treble, etc.)

- As referenced above, I really like the sound of the GoldenEar Tritons, Elac Uni-Fi and Martin Logan Motions. I would like a great base as I am a huge movie buff, but I don't want base or base's sake, I want it to be appropriate/not distorted/overwhelm the rest of the sound.
