Help/Advice with basement theater set up

General Home Theater & Media/Game Rooms - www.avsforum.com
I'm in the process of building out a budget theater in my basement, and looking for some advice on how to get more out of it. I currently have an Epson Home Cinema 2045 projector, Elite Screens Spectrum 100" motorized screen, with an old Onkyo receiver, and Polk RTI A3 fronts, CSI A6 center, and FXI A6 surrounds. I don't have a sub yet but will be buying one soon, hoping to get a nice SVS, HSU, Rythmik, etc. used if possible to help with cost. I'm just very underwhelmed with the sound, and not sure what I should try to do to make this set up better without breaking the bank on equipment. I've attached a drawing of my room, it's far from ideal, with pockets everywhere and it's very open, and large at over 4,000 cubic feet. I have a Denon/Ascend Acoustics/HSU VTF3-MK2 set up in my 3,400 cubic foot family room that blows the doors off of this set up, and I can't figure out why. I know the missing sub is a huge component, and I plan on bringing down the HSU to see what a difference that will make, but I feel like the front soundstage is lacking, the surrounds are great. I am using an old Onkyo fed with a optical cable as my signal, as it doesn't have HDMI inputs, which I will also upgrade very soon. The Onkyo TX-NR575 is currently $229, and I was thinking of picking it up, but feel it's just underpowered for this room, so I've been searching classifieds on here for an more powerful Denon, Pioneer, etc, will this make a big difference? I'd also like some advice on whether upgrading the RTI A3 fronts to RTI A5 or A7 towers would make a big difference? This is used 95% for movies, and I just don't see the towers making that much of a difference, but I would move the A3's as a side surround for 7.1. I also feel like the fronts are spaced too far apart or not pointed properly. I have a lolly column support pole right in the middle of the room, so have to place the couches on either side. I have the fronts facing each couch, rather than the center pole, not sure if that's correct. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated, I know it's difficult going off of a sketch and explanation, but really trying to determine if I just need to feed the system more power, or need bigger speakers, better placement, etc. Sorry for long post, thanks in advance for any help.
