Interested in MDR-Z1R, Thread closed, Is it for me?
A few months ago a kitten ate my PS2000E. I don't mind. I love the kitten more than the headphones. I have many high end headphones. I actually liked the original brushed cup PS1000 better. Which I still have. Either way, not a $1,000 upgrade from the PS1000E IMO. I like the sound of speakers which is what I listen to 95% of the time now. I have the Utopia as well. I thought about the HD800S. One thing is Grado's are uncomfortable. No secret there. Stereophile said the Sony surpasses the Utopia in a similar sound but more on bass where the Utopia is on treble. I found no one else that made such a statement. The Utopia should be in a different league. Stereophile carries some weight, and advertising money. I like hand made by one master in Japan. I have the R10 and 010 as well. I often record with the DT-770. So I do not mind closed. Although for pleasure I normally listen to open cans.
So I am wondering if the Sony matches my description and if it is worth the money? What do you guy's think about it? How would you compare it to a Grado flagship? I imagine again, more bass less treble? It seems well built, but what about the sound? Is it a flagship like the previous Sony's?
This is the first time I ever asked for headphone advice! I normally I give it. I really have been listening to loudspeakers and out of this for a while. Not sure about the Sony. I read a lot of reviews and they are all over the place. Subjective of course. I just wonder what the consensus is on it's sound and if it is in the flagship class. I would purchase the Cardas cable with it making it a $3,000+ headphone.
