"A New Chapter Begins…"

My Take:

Paddington Bear was first introduced to children in Michael Bond’s 1958 book, “A Bear Called Paddington” and the subsequent Paddington Bear series has sold over 35 million copies and been translated into 40 languages. With 2015’s Paddington Michael Bond gave his blessing for his beloved characters to be brought to the big screen.

Paddington 2 like its predecessor combines a mix of live-action, and computer-generated special effects to create the characters/world featured in the story. I enjoyed the first film for its fish out of water context, spirit of adventure and heartwarming charm. If I am being honest, the trailer for this film didn’t leave me hankering to see it. After sitting down with it I was pleasantly surprised. It remains faithful to the character while adding an appropriately contemporary flavor, that has an appealing nature which can be enjoyed by little ones as well as their parents.

Much like Paddington I found it had just the right amount of heartwarming charm while adding the type of adventure and campy humor that makes for pitch perfect family entertainment. I enjoyed watching the returning members of the cast in their various roles and thought that Hugh Grant was an excellent choice to portray Phoenix Buchanan. Paddington 2 isn’t destined for animated film classic status, but it’s a well-crafted sequel that makes for an entertaining and complimentary companion to the first film.

Paddington 2 comes to Blu-ray Disc from Warner Brother Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video and lossless Dolby Atmos/TrueHD 7.1 channel sound.

This is a great looking video presentation from Warner Brother Home Entertainment. High level detail is present throughout so that images are rendered with pristine quality. Colors are bright and visually pleasing and fleshtones are naturally rendered with discernible complexional delineation among the various members of the cast. Contrast and black levels are stable with ample depth and perceptible delineation. I didn’t observe any signs of video related anomalies or artifacts. All in all, this one looks great on Blu-ray.

The 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD (Dolby Atmos Core) soundtrack makes excellent use of the entire surround platform and offers detail rich sonic clarity, crystalline dialog and plenty of room filling bass. This mix doesn’t bombard you with constantly aggressive surround sound. It applies it when appropriate and combines discretely placed directional cues with rear channel ambience that fills the listening area nicely. The front and rear sound fields work in unison to render the soundtrack with excellent imaging and presence. The LFE channel is actively engaged and offers bass response that is punchy and clean. This is a surprisingly good and well-rounded audio presentation.

In listening to the Dolby Atmos surround mix I found it to be of the moderately active variety that makes steady use of the platform. Its use of audio objects placed above is a mix of atmospherics, music and discrete sound effects. This is done very well and creates a tangible level of immersion that coincides with the onscreen events nicely, especially when things ramp up during the prison escape and railroad chase sequences. Speaking of which, there is some excellent use of the overhead channels as Paddington makes his way upward, inside the clock tower during the prison break. I liked how the clock’s internal components clicked and rumbled, placing you inside with Paddington. While this isn’t what I would regard as an aggressive Atmos mix I enjoyed the balance of atmosphere combined with discrete object placement. I think that it complimented the source material and made for an entertaining listening experience.

Final Thoughts:

Based on the children’s book series by Michael Bond Paddington 2 is a solid sequel that proves to be every bit as charming and entertaining as its predecessor. It comes to Blu-ray from Warner Brothers Home Entertainment featuring excellent high definition video, rewarding lossless surround sound, including a complimentary Dolby Atmos immersive sound mix, and a fan friendly supplemental package. Paddington 2 makes for pitch perfect family entertainment that looks and sounds terrific on Blu-ray. If you’re a fan feel free to add it to your video collection.
