Pioneer HDD issue

DVD Recorders (Standard Def) - www.avsforum.com
My brother just gave me his Pioneer DVR 533H DVD recorder. When I turn it on, I get a message "HDD Error." If it does proceed to the regular start screen, I am instructed to go into the Disc Setup menu and initialize the HDD. I started that process about 8 hours ago, and it is still on that screen.

So, I am assuming this is a hard drive failure, and I am going to try to open it to replace the HDD. I believe it has only 80 GB HDD which is of course not made any more. Any other ideas about what might be used?

Also, I presume that like my DirecTV DVR the HDD can be replaced because the firmware is on memory on the DVR's mother board. Is that true? Can I just replace the HDD?

TIA.

SMK
