Romex through wall into riser

General Home Theater & Media/Game Rooms - www.avsforum.com
The question about running romex seems to have been asked about 1000 different ways but I haven't stumbled upon any threads that answer my specific question...

When running romex to a riser that is not connected directly to the wall but butted almost up to it from an available outlet can the cable simply exit the drywall and enter the riser through the frame to wire the outlets? There will be pretty much no gap between the riser flooring and the wall. Maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch.

Would this require some sort of raceway, or, conduit? I've run the romex through the opening where it would enter in the pic to give the general idea of where it would be run.

Thanks,

Jeff
