specific speaker needs for my office setup
I work in an office (vs a cubicle) and I have Harman Kardon Soundsticks (the 1st gen USB ones) attached to a laptop. The 2 "sticks" are on both sides of a 24" monitor, and the subwoofer is under my desk. My setup somewhat resembles this: <a href=" this</a>
The sound quality is really great even at very low volumes, and is even better when I crank it up on the weekend when no one is around.
The Soundsticks are getting old and seems to want to fail...every once in a while, if there's a power surge or I unplug a USB cord "wrong" (don't ask), the speakers *can* *appear* to fail. I have to do some voodoo where I unplug it *entirely* from my USB hub and from its power for 1-4 days (it really is that random), then plug it back in/turn everything on in a certain order and cross my fingers.
Plus when I'm meeting with people, they're seated right "behind" one of the sound sticks, and I sometimes have to put it on its side to make talking a bit easier.
So I've been looking for a replacement. Very specifically, I want something to have good stereo imaging *and* good/equivalent sound quality (I've tried a *lot* of highly-rated bluetooth single-speakers (even a Bose Soundlink and a Sonos Play:1) and don't like any of them). And it needs to sound good even at pretty low volumes. Since I'm sitting like 2 ft away from them, they need to sound good close up (a lot of bluetooth "room-filling sound" speakers seem made to be best heard from a distance).
And lower profile would be great, so I don't have to keep moving them when I'm meeting with people.
And ideally, I don't want to pay more than say $250-300 or so.
Any suggestions? I've even thought about getting a sound bar...would that be a good direction to look in?
