How to test used speakers?

Speakers - www.avsforum.com
I'm going to be buying a set of speakers for my apartment and I was hoping to get some stuff off ebay to save some money, but I'd like to know what's the best way to test them and if there are any warning signs I should look for.

My living room will likely be 200-400 sq feet, I'll be using my Onkyo TX-SR500, and they'll be used mostly for TV/movies (but never terribly loud). My plan was 2 NHT Super Ones, a third Super One for the center or something that looks horizontally symmetrical, and an Emotiva BasX 8.

But I'm open to alternatives (especially if they're cheaper) if there are others that might be equally good given the size of the room or just equally good considering that I'm willing to buy used.
