Waking up an RD-XS55 from 2006
Quite literally found a slumbering time traveler.
I found a Toshiba RD-XS55 in original box which apparently was bought and never used.
Plugged it in and the HDD has a couple test signal recordings but no content... plays those fine.
I put a commercial DVD Region 1 disc in it and after a while it says the disc has no content.. but plays the same disc fine on other Toshibas. Given their history a non-functioning DVD burner doesn't surprise me.. probably needs cleaning of some sort.
The lubricant on the front panel through age has jellified or turned to some sticky muck.. I've seen it before on an RD-XS54 from a long ways away.. so I know its something from the factory that has just degraded over 12 years time.
If there is anyone who had first person experience.. or heck any ideas on how to proceed.. I would appreciate it.
I never in my life expected to see something so rare.. so its sort of surreal.
